My research has focused on: 1) operations research and management science in the forest products industry, emphasizing modeling and optimization of converting trees into logs and recovery of lumber and other products from logs; and 2) quality control and quality management systems in the forest products industry.

I have been especially involved in developing modeling systems that connect silvicultural methods, genetic improvement, wood quality, and product value, with the objectives of improving understanding and communication of how these interact; and providing managers with improved methods for selecting management regimes.

I have also specialized in the area of forest products measurements and conversion factors, material and energy balances of forest products conversion processes, and life cycle analysis of wood and nonwood materials.
