From hinckley@u.washington.edu Thu May 13 19:44:07 2010 Date: Thu, 13 May 2010 19:38:53 -0700 From: Tom Hinckley To: "faccfr@u.washington.edu" , "staffcfr@u.washington.edu" , "cfrgrads@u.washington.edu" , "cfrunder@u.washington.edu" Subject: [Staffcfr] Faculty Vote on School Name Change Dear School of Forest Resources' Community: As a result of the September 23 all school retreat and strategic planning event, a process to consider a name change for the School was ranked the most important thing to accomplish over the next year. A committee under the leadership of Professor Jim Agee polled faculty, staff, students, friends and alumni and provided a report in January 2010. Additional polls and discussion amongst the faculty occurred over the next three months. At the monthly SFR Alumni Association meetings, there were updates and opportunities for feedback. Following discussion at the April 20, 2010 Faculty Meeting, the Faculty of the School of Forest Resources approved a process by which an alternative name for the School might be chosen. The final process was as follows: The faculty were asked to vote for one name from a list of 5 names as an alternative to the name "School of Forest Resources." Alternate names were determined by these methods: 1) the most recently hired pool of faculty met and determined these two names for consideration: "School of Natural Resources" and "School of Ecology, Society, and Bioresources." 2) The students were polled and the top two names they chose by ballot were "School of Natural Resources" and "School of Ecology and Natural Resources." 3) Two names emerged from mid- to late-career faculty and these were: "School of Ecology, Society, and Natural Resources" and "School of Environmental and Forest Sciences". The top vote getter of the 5 alternate names was “School of Environmental and Forest Sciences” and this name was then voted on against the current name, "School of Forest Resources" in a completely separate vote. The vote results were “School of Environmental and Forest Sciences” 25 and School of Forest Resources 12 of 49 eligible to vote faculty; this represents a voting majority. “School of Environmental and Forest Sciences” is the name that will be forwarded to University of Washington Administration and Board of Regents for their approval. The original idea of a name change was first raised approximately 15 years ago – this has not been a hasty process!
