Logging operations around the Pack Forest Campus
Pack Forest is in the final stages of completing the second log sale of 2000. Approximately 1.5 MMbf of timber has been harvested on three stands, including a thinning of 30 acres surrounding the main campus.
The Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) data collection for 2000 has been completed. CFI measurements have been collected at Pack Forest since 1974 on a five-year rotation. Beginning in 1999 an additional 150 plots were added to the inventory system to gain additional data on newly acquired lands and to increase the number of total plots to 430 throughout the 4,320 acres at Pack Forest. Measurements will now be taken on one-fifth of the plots every season. Cruise data is collected on a new palmtop computer and a digital photo is taken at every plot.
Topics in Pack Forest's outreach programs during Autumn 2000 included forest management and wildlife habitats, wetlands, forest ecology, and succession. One especially appreciative group from North Thurston High School wrote the following lines of appreciation to Donna Chapman, Pack Forest's Staff Interpreter:
You took us on many trails,
made us go through mud and muck,
taught us about wet-lands and clear cutting,
while passing huge logging trucks.
With a big smile, and an attitude no less than perky,
You taught us to appreciate the forest,
while treading in water
deciding if it was murky,
you made great bird calls,
let us explore the woods
with sight and touch,
which made us love Pack Forest.
This is why we LOVE you so much!"
