Pack Forest News

The Pack Forest Conference Center reported a very busy summer. Groups covered a wide spectrum, ranging from the Natural Resource Institute to a three-day restoration workshop organized by CFR faculty and graduate students. Other groups using the conference center's facilities included the Puyallup Police Department, UW-Tacoma Education, the Federal Restoration Workshop, the WA State Recycling Association, the UW Orientation Office, and CFR CE Network 2000. Numerous forest tours were also conducted for elementary schools, scouting programs, and outside groups.

Duane Emmons also reports from Pack that:

• Lukas Giessen, a forestry intern from the University of Goettingen in Germany, has just finished a six-month internship at Pack Forest. While at Pack, Lukas assisted in pre-commercial thinning compliance surveys and regeneration surveys, instituted a bear feeding research project in cooperation with the WFPA, and assisted with instruction of the Forest Ecology for International Students program.

• Pack Forest Log Sale L.S. 01.1 was officially completed in July, 2001, with a gross harvest of 1566.4 Mbf and 4096 tons of pulp on two stands totaling 77.5 acres.

• The Pack Forest Dining Hall operations and staff are now under the direction of the Pack Forest Conference Center. Previously all dining hall operations and ten staff were under the direction of UW Housing and Food Services. It is hoped that localized direction of dining hall services will provide a higher level of customer service and smoother operations at Pack.
