Fundraising efforts for the Miller Library were highlighted by a successful auction sponsored by the Northwest Horticultural Society in early May. Total donations were the most ever and will go towards an NHS gift fund to replace and enhance furniture lost in the fire. The guests, including several members of the fire department response team a year ago, were in a mood to celebrate after a difficult year!
Overall fundraising efforts for the library have been so successful that funds have been committed to expanding the rebuilt library by over 1,000 square feet. The additional space will include an enlarged public area and a teaching room for library classes and programs. Miller Foundation contributions, by direct gift and through matching grants, and those of horticultural societies, small business, and numerous individuals have made this expansion possible.
Meanwhile, work continues replacing damaged materials in the collection with gift books and compensating for reduced patron work space with an expanded (to 40 hours per week) Plant Answer Line. This quick reference service for gardeners of the region was particularly popular during the spring and early summer. By phoning 206-UW-PLANT (206-897-5268) between 9-5, Monday through Friday, callers are guided by library staff to the best resources for answering their questions. At other times, questions can be left on voice mail or sent through the library’s website at www.millerlibrary.org.
