On November 17, 1998, the Capital Assets Committee of the UW Board of Regents voted to allow UW Executive Vice President Weldon Ihrig to purchase 120 acres of land to expand Pack Forest. Since the UW first acquired Pack Forest in the 1920s, the area of the Experimental Forest has been continually expanded, with a goal of 4,800 acres of forestland.
Pack Forest was featured in a November 19, 1998 article in the UW Daily. The article gave an overview of the functions performed by Pack, including conferences, education and research opportunities, and timber harvesting. Pack Forest was also featured in The News Tribune (Tacoma, WA) on October 25, 1998, in an article giving an historical overview of the facility and its mission.
