Natural History Reports
You will do a natural history profile of one plant and one animal.
Following this is a list of organisms which may be found in the
urban environment. If you have a favorite that you do not see here,
talk to us about it. Each organism will be profiled by only one
students, so sign up early if you have a favorite!
You will turn in a one-two page profile (format below) of each
organism. You will also be prepared to talk about them to the class
on Feb. 8 or Feb. 15, using NO MORE than three powerpoint slides,
which will be due the Tuesday before your presentation.
Each one-page profile will follow this format*:
- Your name
- Date
- Type of organism (insect, fish, etc.)
- Species name (scientific)
- Common name
Brief description of the organism, plus relevant life history
Native geography (part of world and type of habitat)
If non-native, how introduced to the urban environment and when*
How successful in the urban environment, from "thrives" to "barely
persists."
In which urban environment occurs, how and why it survives or
thrives.
Does it invade any natural environments and how severe are those
environments?
Significance to humans (both positive and negative)
Is management needed? How is it done? Is this adequate?
Related native species (esp. difference species in the same genus).
How do they compare with the species you are studying? For instance,
is one common in urban areas and others not?
Miscellaneous notes, if any.
This includes any interesting tidbits you discover about the
species.
Bibliographic references, numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
Each piece of information above should have numbered references
afterwards. For instance, Introduced for ornamental landscape
use (1,4). The references should be keyed into a list at the end
of the report.
*If some of this information is not relevant to your organism
you can just omit that section.
