Reading Reports

The weekly reading report assignments will be posted on the web page every Tuesday night (well, at least we will try to do this). They will appear on the home page and on the weekly schedule/summary page. Your report must be submitted at the beginning of class on Monday of the following week. It must be in essay report form, typed 12-pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, standard margins, and approximately 450 words in length (and absolutely not to exceed 500 words). We expect you to cite from the reading abundantly and formally using the CBE style unless specifically instructed otherwise.

Each Reading Report will be graded on a 10-point scale. 0-3 points for "the extent and thoughtfulness with which the assigned prompt or question is addressed." 0-4 points for "the extent, accuracy and thoughtfulness with which ideas/concepts/points are cited directly from the assigned reading." 0-3 points for "the readability and logic of the essay(s)." Per the above, the grade will appear on you paper in a form like 3/4/3 =10.

and be sure that you:

o Provide your name in the format above.

o Provide a title for your work (perhaps just restate the question or prompt).

o Address the question or prompt that we have provided in the assignment!

o Use12-pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, standard margins, and approximately 450 words in length (and never to exceed 550 words)

o Cite the reading material liberally using CBE style citation. Cite it in the text of your writing (e.g. "In Toward Ecological Cities the author indicated that…") and with a proper reference at the bottom of your paper (e.g., Platt, R.H. 2004. Toward Ecological Cities: Adapting to the 21st Century Metropolis. Environment, 46(5):10-27).

o Use citations to tie your ideas to the reading material, i.e. indicate where your own ideas flow from the ideas of other authors or explain how your idea is otherwise related to the other authors' ideas.

o Write with professional level diligence - pay attention to spelling and grammar (hint: Microsoft Word provides a good first screening tool).

o Remember that your reading assignments will be due at the beginning of the Tuesday class session each week.
