Urban Ecology - Interdisciplinary Perspectives

 

CLASSROOM CHANGE to Miller 316, for the rest of the quarter starting Wednesday January 19

 

Purpose: Urban Ecology introduces the concept of examining human and natural systems within a unified, interdisciplinary framework. We will bring in relevant principles from ecology, geography, economics, history, urban studies and public policy development and use them to assess case studies of environmental problems and solutions in urban areas.


Pre-requisites, Skills, and Areas of Knowledge: Urban Ecology has no pre-requisites and fulfills the I&S (Individuals & Societies) and NW (Natural World) area requirements. You will be asked to write out weekly assignments and answers to tests, conduct library and on-line research, and be an active participant in class discussions.


Objectives: After taking Urban Ecology you will be able to: 1) recognize the human and ecological components of urban ecology; 2) analyze and evaluate conflicts in urban areas and the information presented by various stakeholders and the media; 3) develop potential ways to mitigate or prevent urban environmental crises.
