ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES

You will complete weekly assignments designed to assist you in collecting information and sources for your final project in this class. With each successive assignment, you will develop a profile of the city you have chosen to focus on for the quarter. The first assignment will be to choose your city. Please refer to the list of cities that has already been developed (see attached sheet). It is important that the city you chose to focus on has adequate information that is easily obtained. The cities on the attached sheet have already been evaluated for the necessary information for successful completion of the final project. If you are interested in choosing another city please ask John for permission.

Guidelines for all assignments (including Assignment 1).

1. On each weekly assignment, please include your name, discussion section, and the specific questions you are answering. Double-space your answers.
2. For answers to each question, be sure to include the sources of your information. See below section for proper formatting of references.
3. For answers to each question, be sure to include the year that the information was collected or published. It is acceptable to have information from different years; however, this is not preferred.
4. Keep track of the sources that you use to answer the questions for each assignment. You will be using them in developing the final project.
5. You can collaborate with other students in the class during the research gathering phase during weekly assignments. However, each student must turn in their own assignment, and follow the guidelines described here. Grading for the weekly assignments and the final assignment will be based on individual work.
6. Assignments turned in late for unexcused reasons will be accepted, but discounted 10% for being late plus 10% for every additional week they are late.

Formatting style for references

This class will use the Chicago Manual of Style formatting style for citing references. Use the Author-Date system for citing references. References need to be cited immediately following the information that you obtained from the specific reference. In addition, for the final project, you will create a list of all the references you used for the final project. Examples of author-date bibliographic formatting style can be found at the following web page: http://www.libs.uga.edu/ref/chicago.html#authordate.

Examples:

Book, single author, in reference list ?
Holmlund, C. 2002. Impossible bodies: feminity and masculinity at the movies. New York: Routledge.

Book single author, within the body of the assignment ?
[put citation at the end of the sentence or information] ……. (Holmlund 2002).

Website, in reference list ?
University of Georgia, "Points of Pride," University of Georgia, http://www.uga.edu/profile/pride.html. Retrieved 2 January 2005.

Website, within the body of the assignment ?
[put citation at the end of the sentence of information] ….. (University of Georgia).

Helpful Hints and Suggested Sources: The information you will be asked to gather about your city throughout the quarter is typically available for all cities. A few sources are listed below that are good places to start in beginning this and future assignments. These sources do not contain all needed information. Different cities will have different sources and ways of communicating information. You are expected to search out and utilize all resources available to you including the internet and university library system.

• Atlas
• Encyclopedia
• Local Newspapers
• City Government web pages
• City Tourism and Information web pages
• Census Data (available on-line)
• National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (www.noaa.gov)
