TREES IN OUR ENVIRONMENT

Course objectives: Tree form and function is examined from an evolutionary perspective and illustrated through the characteristics of ~60 tree species found in the Pacific Northwest. A major goal of the course is to provide baseline knowledge and observational skills that will allow you to increase your knowledge and enjoyment of trees after the course is over.

Course topics: tree (and shrub) taxonomy, tree growth and reproduction, evolution and adaptive strategies, challenges of human manipulation, aesthetic and cultural values.

Course format: lectures, individual projects, optional fieldtrips, and outdoor laboratories at the Washington Park Arboretum.
