Course Description

In this class, the basic concepts of converting wood, and other biomass, into fibers will be presented. Topics to be covered include raw materials, pulping technologies (mechanical, kraft, sulfite, and others), and bleaching (chlorine, chlorine dioxide, oxygen, peroxides, ozone, etc). Particular emphasis will be placed on the process equipment, chemical processes, material energy balances, and chemical mechanisms and kinetics. The operation of reactors used to process biomass to make fuels and chemical will also be discussed. The class meets for a 50 minute lecture three days a week. Although this is a lecture class, a significant amount of class participation is encouraged.

Although there are no prerequisites for this class, it is highly recommended that PSE 406 is taken before taking this class. This class will build off of many of the concepts taught in PSE 406. Background materials will be provided for those who have not taken PSE 406.
