Static IP's and DNS Names

Static IP addresses and DNS names make your computer easier to access from the internet. They also make your computer easier for criminals to find and exploit. We at CFRIT spend a large amount of time securing systems and cleaning up after security breaches. Because of this we require the assignment of an advanced user as the Technical Contact who will be responsable for securing the machine and maintaining it in a manner that does not disrupt the network, and the approval of a Department Head for the issuance of a static IP addresses and/or DNS Name.

NOTE: Use of University of Washington network for personal or commercial use is strictly prohibited. Indeed, use of any UW resources for any personal or commercial use is strictly prohibited.

WARNING: The assignment of Static IP addresses and Host Names to network equipment such as personal computers causes increased exposure to viruses and network criminals.  Such equipment must be properly secured and requires the appointment of a technical manager who is responsible for the device.
