Health and Safety Committee Minutes

1999

April 6, 1999
10:30 a.m.

Present:
Art Breitsprecher, Carl Harrington, Paul Smith, Shawn Wilson, Dongsen Xue

Absent:
Stan Humann, Phil Hurvitz, Mark Lewis, Fred Hoyt, Sally Morgan

Minutes Minutes from the last meeting were approved as written.

Old Business

Building Floor Plans
Anderson Hall was walked and all safety data sketched in. The information was given to Phil to draw in.

Arboretum Safety Glasses
No action or response has come regarding the memo sent earlier. A copy will be sent to Chris Pfeiffer and John Wott at the Arboretum.

New Business

Freezer/Refrigeration Rooms
Recently there was an incident on campus where someone was locked into walk-in refrigeration room. A door malfunction prevented them from getting out. Eventually, they were freed when they set off an alarm within the room.

Art checked the six rooms in Bloedel and none of them seem to pose this hazard.

Logger Tapes
It was noted that Logger Tapes pose a hazard if allowed to rewind uncontrolled. The bark nail could come whipping back and pose a danger to soft tissues. Any user should consider safety glasses when working with these tapes. In any case, users should always feed the tape back in to the reel and not let it rewind freely. Instructors and Field Supervisors should conduct training with students regarding how to properly rewind the tapes.

Lab Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
It was reported that some undergraduate lab classes are not supplying PPE. It is thought that an inventory of current supplies and actual needs should be done. Then the proper funding source (instructional budgets?) should be used to supply the PPE. Carl volunteered to draft a letter to the division chairs, which the committee can review for the next meeting.

Adjourn The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 AM.

Minutes
Minutes from the last meeting were approved as written.

Meeting Times
Due to conflicts with the University Wide Health and Safety Committee meetings, we changed the meeting times to 10:30 AM, still the first Wednesday of each month.

Action Items

Old Business

Building Floor Plans
Carl and Phil have not yet worked on developing floor plans for the college with safety-related data, such as fire alarms, evacuation plans and fire extinguishers. They will try to get to work on this in the near future. Phil has been very busy instructing this quarter.

Bloedel and Winkenwerder - Exterior Glass Curtains
We have not heard any reports from Facilities about their assessment of the seismic stability of the glass panels outside Bloedel and Winkenwerder. This will be looked into before the next meeting.

Courtyard Cracks
It was noted that there are open cracks in the Bloedel Courtyard still. The Mason Shop removed the aged spacers, but has not returned to fill the gaps. Carl reported that he continues to press the Mason Shop to finish the job. They are short handed, but said they will endeavor to get it done before the Arbor Day Fair in April.

Radios
The radios have been fixed, so now 4 CB radios and antennas are available for field trip use. A reservation form is posted on the woodshop cage gate.

New Business

Field Safety Procedures Draft
Carl distributed a draft of Field Safety Procedures for the committee to review and comment on. The current wording will be re-worked to make it more specific to the kinds of work the College does in the field. It will also corrected to bring it in line with existing UW and CFR policies. Suggestions for additional sections are also being solicited. Professor Steve West will be asked to provide procedures for animal work.

Adjourn
The meeting was adjourned at 1:55 PM
