Dissertation Title:
Model Evaluation of the Fire Scenario Builder (FSB): development, validation and application
Description of work:
The Fire Scenario Builder (FSB) was originally developed in 2006 for integration into air quality
modeling frameworks. FSB is a regional or sub-continental wildfire simulator that uses climate, weather,
vegetation and historical expected area burned to stochastically produce a list of fire locations, size,
ignition start date and duration. Simulating wildfire across broad spatial scales with fine temporal resolution
can help improve understanding of the climate-wildfire-air quality system. Better understanding and quantification
of consequent emissions from regional wildfire can help directly and indirectly meet current and shape new air
quality regulations. This dissertation conducts model evaluation at each stage of the FSB version 3 life cycle:
development, validation and application. The evaluation will establish guidelines for appropriate use of the
model in future applications.
