Recent Forest Systems & Bio-Energy
Program Activity
3/15/05 The paper titled, Emerging bio-energy technology solutions to reduce fire risk along the Wildland Urban Interface was presented by Michael Andreu and co-authored by M. G. Andreu, K. Vogt, D. Vogt, A. G. Andreu, R. Gara, and C. D. Oliver was presented at the International Conference on Emerging Issues along the Urban to Rural Gradient: Linking Science and Society. The focus of the paper was 1) to discuss the idea of an new vision for a wood utilization infrastructure based on the combination of centralized mills and mobile wood biomass to bio-methanol systems and 2) to look at the economic feasibility of these systems to address fuel reduction treatments in the WUI. abstract A copy of this presentation will be available in the near future. 2/24/05 A bill sponsored by Senators Ken Jacobsen and Jeanne Kohl-Welles was introduced to the Washington State Senate Natural Resources, Ocean & Recreation Committee to garner legislative support of the research efforts of the Forest Systems and Bio-Energy (FSB) program. To support this bill, Michael Andreu presented testimony about the program and project: Energy, People and Forest Health: a working solution for Washington. (When viewing the slides and the speaker's notes simultaneously be sure to click on the slides to view additional animated points). 2/17/05 At the 4th Annual Foresters Forum held in Coeur dAlene, ID, Kristiina Vogt participated on a panel discussing Future Trends in Fiber Utilization. 2/11/05 The sponsors of the Climate Change, Energy and the Future of Washington State Conference held at Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA invited Kristiina Vogt to participate on a panel: Energy Projects in the PNW that Reduce Carbon Emissions. Her talk was titled: New Technology converting biomass from small trees to methanol to harvest energy for fuel cell 2/01/05 The Forest Systems and Bio-Energy Program (FSB) and TimberJack co-hosted a BBQ and information session on Bio-Energy opportunities being pursued in Finland and in the Pacific Northwest. Presentations were given from Finnish experts on new biomass harvesting technology and large scale bio-energy production systems. Presentations were also given by Michael Andreu and Kristiina Vogt about the technology development efforts the FSB program is engaging in. 1/21/05 Michael Andreu was invited to participate on a bio-energy panel hosted by the Associated Oregon Loggers (AOL) in Eugene, OR at their annual meeting. He presented a western perspective on emerging opportunities for sustainable forest management and how the logging industry might benefit from them. The presentation can be viewed at this link: Emerging Opportunities for Sustainable Management of PNW Forests. (Click the slideshow option in the lower right hand corner to see presentation animations.) 1/19/05 The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs approved a working relationship with Forest Systems and Bio-Energy Program to explore bio-methanol production opportunities. 1/18/05 Kristiina Vogt was a featured guest on Timbertalk (a radio show produced in Arkansas) to discuss bio-energy issues. 11/29/04 Michael Andreu was invited to present at the University of Idaho College of Natural Resources Seminar Series: Fire, Water and People. The topic of his talk was: Bio-energy Opportunities to Improve Forest Health. 10/27/04 A paper submitted to the Journal of Forestry titled: Societal Values and Economic Return Added for Forest Owners by Linking Forests to Bioenergy Production was accepted for publication in the Jan/Feb 2005 issue. FSB co-authors: Kristiina Vogt, Michael Andreu, Dan Vogt, Raga Sigurdardottir, Kevin Hodgson, and Peter Schiess 10/26/04 Article again appears this time in the Small Forest Landowners (SFLO) newsletter. 10/22/04 CABI Publishing Company approved the writing of a book tentatively titled: Forests and Society: Sustainability and Life Cycles of Forests in Human Landscapes Editors include FSB research members: Kristiina Vogt, Dan Vogt, Bob Edmonds, Ragnhildur Sigurdardottir, and Michael Andreu as well as others: Jon Honea, Joyce Berry and Toral Patel Weynand. 10/22/04 Kevin Hodgson was invited to give a presentation at the Renewable Energy Forum sponsored by the UW College of Engineering. The purpose of this meeting was to facilitate interactions among the various on-campus research groups involved with renewable energy research. One interesting aspect that Kevin noted was that the FSB program was unique in that it bridged a gap between the College of Forest Resources and the College of Engineering by having components of both disciplines. 10/22/04 Kristiina Vogt made a presentation to the Innovations Norway Group. This talk introduced how the FSB program is relevant to forestry not only in the Pacific Northwest but also to the global community. She also presented how our research is relevant to issues such as: global warming, forest health, and rural economic development. 10/13/04 News article listed on ArcaMax.com publishing website. 10/09/04 A news article focusing the FSB program came out in the Spokesman
Review under the headline: Process converts small trees to
energy, technology turns scrawny trees into wood alcohol 10/04/04 Michael Andreu presented to the joint meeting of the Canadian Institute of Forestry and the Society of American Foresters in Edmonton, Canada. The presentation was titled: Emerging Technologies and Emerging Opportunities for Sustainable Management of Western Forests. FSB co-authors were: Michael Andreu, Kristiina Vogt, Kevin Hodgson, Ragnhildur Sigurdardottir, Dan Vogt in addition FSB partners from Idatech were co-authors as well: Dave Edlund and Claude Duss 09/30/04 Engineers from Lawrence Livermore National Lab, DOE completed an internal
review of our proposed process. They independently conclude that the
process is feasible and that no new technological breakthroughs are
required. We are working with UW Technology Transfer Office to secure
patent rights for future developments. |
