The Pacific Northwest CESU has compiled a list of potential sources of funding for individuals and organizations wishing to pursue studies or research in fields involving the understanding and management of natural and cultural resources. The majority of these sources offer support in the form of scholarships, fellowships, and grants.

Funding specifically for research in the National Park System

  • NPS Research Needs : More information on what various Parks are seeking in the PNW CESU region

Schoodic Education and Research Center Opportunities to expand the scope and effectiveness of research within Acadia National Park and the National Park Service system.

Boyd Evison Graduate Fellowship, Grand Teton Natural History Association. Scholarships average $5000-$10,000 per project, and may include housing provided at Grand Teton National Park.

Fellowship in the Rockies    Housing and $5000 stipend and research expenses for graduate research conducted during three months in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Denali National Park Research Fellowships $3000-$5000 grants for graduate and faculty research.

NPS National Center for Preservation Technology & Training Grants     Varies by year and grant.   Funding purposes include training, technology and basic research.

NPS Cultural Resources Diversity Program - Scholarships and Fellowships   Listing includes relevant internal and external funding, not limited to park locations.

NPS Social Science Program - Graduate Student Internships     Semester spent in Denver, Colorado by graduate student interns who work with program staff on research and technical assistance projects that deliver information used by NPS managers and the public.

Western National Parks Association Grants    Scientific research grants benefiting the management, preservation, and interpretation of park resources. The Association considers funding well-justified proposals in the natural and social sciences giving priority to park areas served by the Association. .

Scholarships, fellowships and grants for research that may be done within/have relevance to public lands

American Ornithologist's Union Several types of awards given to AOU members.

American Society of Mammologists Awards for graduate-student members of ASM.

Animal Behavior Society Grants Various grants awarded to graduate student members for research.

ASPRS Fisher Fellowship (remote sensing) Various graduate and undergraduate awards.

Award in Coastal Wetlands Studies Up to $5000 for graduate research.

Boone & Crockett Club Studies on wildlife diseases affecting the conservation and management of big game species.

Catherine Beattie Fellowship Grant given in the amount of $1,000 to $4,000 to conduct research on an endangered U.S. plants. Preference is given to students focusing on the endangered flora of the Carolinas or the southeastern United States.

Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation Seed grants up to $10,580. The Board of Directors of the Lindbergh Foundation is planning to concentrate the scope of future grants primarily into aviation and aviation-related environmental issues. .

Charles Redd Center for Western Studies Awards for research (various disciplines) dealing with the Mountain West.

Community Forestry and Environmental Research Partnerships Graduate awards for participatory field work in U.S. communities.

Conservation Innovation Grants and Cooperative Conservation Partnership Funding from Natural Resources Conservation Service

Earthwatch Research Grants (doctoral) Project funding amount depends on the number of Earthwatch volunteers included as assistants.

EPA National Network for Environmental Management Studies Funded, pre-developed research opportunities related to environmental protection, including pollution control, science, engineering, technology, and social science.   Graduate and undergraduate levels.

American Philosophical Society Endowed research grants.

Frances M. Peacock Scholarship Research on endangered bird habitat, funded to $4000.

Garden Club of America Scholarships, including:

  • Fellowship in Ecological Restoration: Award for study and research in ecological restoration.
  • Scholarship in Field Botany: Summer studies in pure botany.
  • Summer Environmental Studies Awards: Summer work or studies beyond academic requirements.

Geological Society of America Graduate Research Grants Partial support of master's and doctoral thesis research in the geological sciences for graduate students in universities in the US, Canada, Mexico and Central America..

Global Change Education Program GREF Global change research encompasses a number of technical areas, including atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climate, and terrestrial processes. GCEP has two components: Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) and Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships (GREF).

Gloria Barron Wilderness Society Scholarship $10,000 graduate award toward research and preparation of a paper on an aspect of wilderness. We strongly encourage proposals relating to climate change, as well as other topics regarding wilderness conservation.

Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship for Applied Physical Science   Awarded to students beginning doctoral research in applied physical sciences.

Hunt Summer Scholarship in Field Botany Undergraduate and masters student award for summer study in field botany, $2000; does not support laboratory work.

Joseph Fischer Dissertation Fellowship (Resources for the Future) Doctoral research in economics or social sciences dealing with environment, natural resources, or energy topics. Stipend of $18,000.

Laird Norton Endowment Foundation that focuses on four funding areas: climate change, global fundamentals, arts in education, and watershed stewardship.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowship A unique graduate fellowship for doctoral candidates in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, open to all U.S. citizens, but with emphasis on recruitment of applications from historically under-represented minorities and women. Applicants must have an employer sponsor.

National Water Reseaerch Institute Fellowships for U.S. graduate students in the areas of water resources and treatment.

Native Plant Conservation Initiative Program of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation primarily funds conservation-action projects, although research related to agency management of native plants is considered.

NOAA Sea Grant Funding and Fellowships Funding opportunities for researchers and graduate students.

NSF-wide and Crosscutting Funding Opportunities    This site provides program information for activities sponsored by more than one National Science Foundation organization. In addition, all NSF organizations accept proposals that cut across organizational and programmatic boundaries.  

Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship (historic preservation) The Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship, a joint program of the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) and the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), permits an architectural historian to work on a 12-week HABS project during the summer of 2010.

Sigma Xi Grants-in-aid-of-research The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to undergraduate and graduate students from all areas of the sciences and engineering.

Society for Integrative & Comparative Biology Various awards up to $2000.

Udall Conflict Resolution Fellowships Awards to develop increased opportunities for young Americans to prepare for and pursue careers related to the environment, and to Native Americans and Alaska Natives who intend to pursue careers in health care and tribal public policy. Awards of $24,000 for doctoral students in their last year for writing dissertations on topics of environmental policy or conflict resolution.

Wenner-Gren Research Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship Funding to write up existing research in anthropology funded to $40,000.

Wildlife Conservation Society   Graduate Scholarship Program: Clive Marsh Scholarships

Wilson Ornithological Society Research Grants Three different research awards.

Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Science Grants Program Grants to organizations and universities for research concerning conservation in the Yellowstone to Yukon ecoregion.
