- Dave Peterson Receives International Scientific Achievement Award
David L. Peterson has spent most of his career studying the complex subalpine ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest
and the effects of environmental stressors, such as fire and climate change, on these systems. Peterson recently
received the 2005 Scientific Achievement Award from the
International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO)
for his research findings and publishing achievements. He has published 160 scientific articles and three books
about his primary research findings in fire ecology, mountain ecology, and climate change.
The award was presented in August during the 22nd World Congress of the IUFRO in Brisbane, Australia. The IUFRO
promotes forest science cooperation by uniting more than 15,000 scientists in about 700 member organizations in
110 countries.
Peterson’s international activities with IUFRO and other organizations include participation in working groups
on air pollution effects in forests, climate change, and natural resource monitoring. He is currently developing
quantitative guidelines for fuel treatment in dry forests of western North America. He is also a principal
investigator for the Western Mountain Initiative, a scientific consortium focused on climate change effects
in mountain ecosystems.
Peterson is a research biologist at the USDA Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station and a
professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. He joined the Forest Service in 1980 after earning a Ph. D.
from the University of Illinois.
- Dan Fagre Receives Top Honor from National Park Service
Dan received the National Park Service Director's Award for Natural Resource Research on March 15, 2005,
at the George Wright Society biennial conference in Philadelphia. Dan was selected for the honor because of
his ability to perform excellent scientific studies, resulting in significant publications, his ability to "outreach"
to the park staff and visitors, and his penchant for collaboration with other researchers and managers in the
Rocky Mountain region.
