  • Since the last issue, there have been two important personnel changes that will affect the SMC. First, David Thorud, Dean of the College of Forest Resources since 1981 and a strong supporter of the SMC, has announced that he will retire effective June 30, 2000. University of Washington President Richard McCormick has appointed an Advisory Committee to assist in the search for a new Dean and I am one of the members. The committee will be pursuing all avenues to identify outstanding candidates. If you have any suggestions regarding potential candidates, please forward their names to me and I will pass them on to the committee. The other personnel change is the arrival of Dr. Gero Becker from the University of Freiburg in Germany who will be with us as a Visiting Scholar. Dr. Becker will be working with us on branch modeling and other areas of wood quality. A profile of Dr. Becker appears in this newsletter.

On June 17, the SMC staff and Washington DNR had a field trip to visit a Type I Installation (#703 Longbell Road), a Type II Installation (#805 Pilchuck Bridge), and a Type III Installation (#926 R.F. Sale). A total of 20 individuals participated and it was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to discuss the objectives of each type of installation, walk through the various treatments, get a sense of how they were responding, and answer questions. All of the participants felt that this was a very successful and educational trip.

We hope that other organizations would also be interested in developing similar field trips for their personnel. If you are interested in doing so please contact me. Last year, I summarized the results of the SMC branch measurement protocol based on the field test on one Type I and on Type II installations. During the past field season, more installations were visited and we now have branch data on 5 Type I and 8 Type III installations. Eric Turnblom and I have been analyzing the data and a summary of the new results appears in this issue. We plan on extending the analysis, preparing a professional journal article and a fact sheet during the 4th quarter.

    Articles in This Issue

This issue contains one article, and updates on ORGANON, the Nutrition Project , Nitrogen Carry-Over, and an update on the Effects of Organic Matter Retention and Other Soil Management Practices on Long-term Productivity of a Pacific Northwest Coastal Douglas-fir Site. The title of the article is Modeling Number and Size of Branches in Young Coastal US Douglas-fir Plantations as Affected by Silvicultural Treatments, by UW Professors David Briggs and Eric Turnblom. This article is condensed from a paper of the same title presented at the 3rd IUFRO Workshop on Connection between Silviculture and Wood Quality through Modeling Approaches and Simulation Softwares, held in France on September 5-12, 1999. For a copy of the paper with complete description of the sample installations and analysis procedures, either contact one of the authors or obtain it from the SMC website.
