Field Notes

With the start of September and the end of the growing season close at hand the 1999/2000-field season has begun. Figure 1 compares the amount of work in 1997, 98 and this winter by Type of installations and the different jobs required in each. As you can see the total amount of work has remained fairly constant with the exception of the very large increase in the number of Type I installation being thinned this year. While the thinning is done by the cooperator, the field crew does need to measure the plot and mark the trees to be left.

The field crew usually is required to spend at least part of the day when the thinning begins to make sure everyone understands the instruction and does a correct job. This will require good communication and cooperation between the field crew and the landowners. We look forward to a busy season. Please take the time to look at Figure 2 which shows where the work will be done this winter and note if your company or organization will be required to do any thinning or pruning and plan accordingly. The field crew will try to have all the marking done by the first of the year and the landowners have until April to get their work completed. If you have any questions contact Bob Gonyea, (work), 206/543-2792, (cell), 206/799-9396, email: bgonyea@u.washington.edu. If you see that we are measuring an installation on your land and you think you or one of your field people would like to be involved please let us know. We can use the help and enjoy the opportunity to share what we are doing and get input form the cooperators.
