Spring Quarter Field Trip
Ara has looked into speaking with a ranger from the Chelan area forests, where
there was a forest fire last summer. She will call the ranger district early
next year to possibly arrange for a day trip to visit the burn site, after
the winter.
We discussed inviting Prof. Jim Agee to join the SAF group for the field trip.
Also discussed the possibility of having the field trip be a "for credit"
class. One credit, and open the trip up to undergrads and non-SAF members,
to increase interest in the group. This will be further discussed in the winter.
Winter Quarter Field Trip
Winter Quarter Field trip to the Washington State Forestry Board Meeting,
Jan 15th (in Olympia). John Garth will send out contact phone numbers and
email addresses of the other board members (Dean Bare is one of the Board
members), so that SAF members can contact board members to learn their opinion
on upcoming discussion issues.
Two Issues to be discussed by the Board in the near future:
1) Selling of state trust lands to reinvest the money in other interest bearing
instruments.
2) Legal action taken by residents on a lake perimeter in the Bellingham area.
Residents claim that logging of trust lands has caused a decline in water
quality of the lake.
Michael Andreu to look into issue one, selling of WA State Trust lands, and will send out a brief summary.
Karen Black will look into Bellingham lake issue and will send out a brief summary.
Winter or Spring Field Trip
Morris Johnson will contact Simpson lumber mill in Tacoma to arrange for a
SAF chapter visit to the highly computerized mill. Heather Rogers will look
into visiting an active harvest site in the Tacoma area, either with Weyerhaeuser
or DNR land-to be visited prior to the mill. This trip-visiting the forests/harvest
area in the morning and the mill in the afternoon, will be planned for late
February or early March.
John Garth will look into costs for renting a van, or arranging other transportation, for upcoming trips.
The SAF student chapter would like to increase membership, by getting more students involved. Field trips will be enticing. We also hope to have more members regularly attend meetings.
SAF Student Chapter Officers Update

nominate, and vote in, new officers, who will meet with outgoing officers
prior to the end of the academic year, and then begin with Autumn quarter
in October. Next elections will be held in May 2003.
