Meeting held at 1:15 in the Forest Club Room
Reminder to those attending the Wreath making dinner that Pruners/clippers are most helpful!!
John Garth looked into renting vans from the school. The UW offers the most economical vans, especially for short distance trips. Vans can be rented by the day, and picked up at 7:30 am.
Michael Andreu looked into the issue of the DNR selling off some of the trust lands, for reinvestment elsewhere; but couldn't find extensive information. Apparently DNR in the past has occasionally sold off some land.
Karen Black looked into the issue of the DNR land at Whatcom Lake near Bellingham. DNR owns about 50% of the land in the watershed, that has seen extensive development in the past 20 years. The water quality has decreased and citizens have pointed fingers at DNR and timber harvest. See the other word doc. with information from the North Cascades Audubon Society web page, and the DNR site.
Luke Rogers may have more information on timber harvesting from the Whatcom Lake watershed.
January 15th, Wednesday, will be the first field trip of winter quarter. Interested
students can attend the monthly board meeting of the State Forestry Board,
in Olympia. We will likely leave early in the morning, but specific details
will go out after school starts in January. Discussion items at this meeting
will likely include the 2 above: DNR lands at Whatcom Lake, and the possible
sale of DNR trust lands. Interested students (Heather, Alicia, Micheal Andreu,
Jason Englehart, John Garth & Karen) can contact board members. John Garth
has contact info.
Friday, February 21st, 2003 field trip to Tacoma area to visit Simpson log mill in the morning, and then a harvest area later in the day. Morris will coordinate with Simpson. Jason Englehart will coordinate with Larry Mason to contact the Contract Loggers Association to find a good site to visit in the Tacoma vicinity.
Michael Andreu raised the question: How do we get more undergraduate students
involved with SAF? As a student group, we
.
· Could get undergraduate forestry major names from Michelle and personally
solicit
· Could have someone go to undergrad forestry related classes and give
a brief talk about SAF
· Could have our next meeting over at CUH, coordinate with Tom Hinckley
and try to get some of the "urban forestry" students involved
· At the next Forest Social could have someone talk briefly about the
group and the activities we have planned for winter and spring quarter.
Phil Hurvitz offered to help with the SAF student web page. Karen Black will coordinate with Phil to get updates on the web site as well as an itinerary of activities. Improving the web site should help with getting the word out about our SAF chapter.
Next meeting will be the second week in January.
