Meeting held at 12 noon, Forest Club Room

Field Trip Report
Feb. 21, '03: Simpson Mill in Tacoma and Capitol Forest near Olympia. Both were great visits!

New Vice President
Paul Lachance was appointed new vice president, as Jason Englehart will graduate this quarter. All members at the meeting today approved the appointment.

Fiduciary Review- Michael Andreu
Long Fund (Dean's money, appropriated for SAF use) Have $152 remaining. Spent $48 on the Tacoma field trip. We have plenty for spring trips. If we don't use the remaining money we will lose it.
Scholarship Fun (Money available for paying ½ of new membership dues). Two new members were each given $15 (Indroneil and Luke). There remains $60 to support 4 other new members. If we don't find new members by early next quarter, this money will be re-appropriated.
General Fund $274 balance

T Shirts: Andrew Hill
Andrew would like to design a T-shirt that we can sell to raise money for the student chapter. Ara may help with the design. If possible, it would be ideal to design and print the t-shirts in time to be sold at the fund-raiser dinner in April.

Spring Joint Meeting with The South Puget Sound Chapter
Discussion of where to hold the meeting based on fee rates for facility use.
Best idea is to secure the Arboretum, as it will cost $100 total, and provide ample parking. Ara will confirm the availability of the building from 5 to 10 pm on April 17th.
Food Costs? How much will we need to buy the food for approximately 50 people?
Drinks? $1/beer; or we could get a pony keg, or try to get free beer from Red Hook
Kitchen Facilities: Ara spoke with Phil's friend, Chris Hill, about using an industrial kitchen to prepare the dinner. Will also contact Charlie, who runs the lunch program at Seattle Prep and does catering. Ara wants to centralize the kitchen prep, and will need a crew of volunteers to help prepare the chili dinner.
Also we need to inform Don Hanley of the where, when and how much.

RESEARCH Presentations at the Dinner/Joint Meeting
Karen spoke with Mark Swanson about presenting his research activities in Chili. Mark sounded interested. Andrew Hill also can present. LMS (presented by Michael, Heather or Elaine) is a third topic of interest.

Fort Lewis Field Trip, May 2nd, Friday, 2003: Sign up NOW in the Silviculture Lab in Wink!
We can take up to two vanloads of students.
Sign Up list will be in the Silviculture Lab. Any questions, contact Paul plach@u.washington.edu
In mid to late April Paul and Derek will coordinate a pre-trip seminar to prep students on what we will see.

STATE BOARD/DNR
New Issue before the State Board is Certification (either by FSC or SFI) of the WA DNR forestlands. This could be a good issue for SAF students to get involved with as state timberlands directly fund public education. Students could contact the board members, ask questions, and then we will address issues during the public comment period at the appropriate monthly board meeting. Alicia will distribute more information on the matter.

WEBISTE
The new website looks great! Many thanks to Phil for setting up the site, and teaching us how to update it. Check it out at www.cfr.washington.edu/SAF
Ara is working on some artwork for the banners. Ara and Alicia will help with updating the site.
As a student group we may be able to compete for the "best student chapter website" competition. June 15th Deadline.

National Meeting in Buffalo, NY
Not much information posted on the SAF website yet. Ara will continue to look into scholarship opportunities

World Forestry Congress
September 21 to 28, 2003 in Quebec City, Canada
Can we use the $500/student to attend this meeting, rather than the SAF meeting? There may be more students interested in attending this meeting, than the national SAF meeting.
Are student scholarships available??? Check this web page for more information
