Minutes from SAF meeting 10/08/03
Meeting held 1 pm to 2 pm in Forest Club Room
Everyone gave a brief introduction including name and area of study. The chapter officers gave a brief description of the purpose and mission of the national SAF organization, as well as the purpose of our student chapter was made. Activities undertaken by the student chapter are entirely student-determined. We would like to encourage new members to share their ideas for this year's activities.
Michael gave a PP slideshow describing the events of the World Forestry Congress in Quebec City. SAF members who were able to go to the Congress were Michael, Anne, Mariano, Edie and Ara. Thanks again to the Dean for supporting this trip.
It was agreed that the chapter is interested in discussing the merits/ disadvantages to DNR certification in WA State. This will be a central topic for an upcoming meeting. If you are interested in learning more about certification of state forests, please contact Alicia.
There was a brief discussion about how to focus our activity planning over
the next year. It was agreed that we would form sub-committees to discuss
possible excursions. Ideas that came up included:
" Visiting local schools to discuss forestry and forest practices;
" Returning to Ft Lewis to see a prescribed burn.
If you are interested in forming a committee, please form them around the
general headings:
1. Volunteer work (This could include school visits or habitat for humanity
work);
2. Policy (This could include becoming involved in state policies, like the
DNR issues);
3. Practices (Like the Fort Lewis trip).
Future meeting times were also discussed. It appeared that 1:30 on Wednesdays
work better for many people.
