SAF meeting minutes October 29, 2003

Central topic discussed were possible field trips or activities for the quarter.

Alicia is in the process of contacting a representative from DNR to see if he/she can come speak to either just an SAF group or to an open forum sponsored by SAF. Another option is to also attend the DNR public hearings scheduled to discuss the draft EIS for the different harvest calculations. One is scheduled for Dec 2 in Lacey, another is Dec 11 in Des Moines. Contact Alicia if interested.

In the Spring we will organize a fieldtrip to do a tour of the Greenlake trees with a dendrologist.

A likely fieldtrip for the winter is to visit the Port of Tacoma or the Port of Seattle to learn about how pests are controlled for during the import/export of forest products. Derek Beauchemain offered to ask Dr. Sarah Reichard if she would be interested in helping to facilitate or guide a trip. Michael will talk to Brad White.

Another activity for which folks have demonstrated interest is in doing a Habitat for Humanity day. Edie is trying to coordinate something possibly for the Spring.

Chapter voted on and passed a formal policy on how to use the Dean-allocated budget for student participation in SAF or other national/international forestry-related conferences.

For future SAF meetings, we should be sure to send emails to all college listservers as well as to SAF members.

The Forest Club, SAF and the Wildlife Society will jointly sponsor a winter social on December 4.
