WOOD SHOP USE POLICY

Cooperation in ensuring the safety of shop activities is a shared responsibility of the Administration and regular users of the shop. Continued operation of the shop is contingent upon a safe working environment and compliance with this policy.

The wood shop space in Bloedel is open to use by SFR students, staff, and faculty in the context of their study/job requirements. Shop facilities are state property and may not be used for personal projects.

Power Tool Training

You must be certified as a trained user before you will be allowed to check out the key that unlocks the power tools. Training is provided quarterly. Please send an email to cfrbldgs@u.washington.edu to sign up for the next available class.

The “Buddy System” for Power Tool Use

There must be at least two people in the space when power tools are in use. The tool user must be trained; the observer does not necessarily need training certification (in which case they may not operate any power equipment), but must wear proper eye and ear protection.

Key Schedule for Power Tool Use

To use the power tools, you and your “buddy” must check out the key from 107 Anderson (Director's Office). The key is available for check-out between 8 a.m. -noon and 1-5 p.m. , Monday through Friday. Your training certification is noted on the key list; you will not be allowed to check out the key if you are not on the list of trained individuals. The key is not available over the weekends or after hours and it must be returned by 5 pm on the day of checkout. The power tool key may not be loaned or duplicated; doing so will result in the permanent suspension of shop privileges.

Accidents

All accidents must be reported immediately to the project supervisor (either staff supervisor or Principal Investigator) and emailed to cfrbldgs@u.washington.edu . The supervisor must complete a UW Incident Report, either hard-copy at http://www.ehs.washington.edu/forms/ohs/incident.pdf or on-line OARS (Online Accident Reporting System).

Safety Protection

Safety glasses and ear plugs must be worn in the shop area at all times.  Both can be found in the silver box at the end of the front counter farthest from the sink.

Clean-up

Clean-up is the responsibility of shop users. Please report unsafe conditions and tool maintenance issues to cfrbldgs@u.wasington.edu .

 Noncompliance

Failure to abide by these guidelines will result in suspension of shop privileges.
