2009 Event

Date: May 27, 2009

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Place: Anderson 207 (Forest Club Room)

It's spring -- the flowers are blooming, the pollen is flying -- that must mean it's time for the annual CFR Recognition event! The 2009 CFR annual recognition event will be Wednesday, May 27, starting at 2:30 p.m. in Anderson 207, Forest Club Room. You'll be getting emails soon, asking for nominations for the different award categories and inviting you to participate in the silent auction and the dessert contest. For now, though, just make sure Wednesday, May 27th is on your calendar. The fun starts at 2 p.m. with the dessert contest (life is short -- eat dessert first) and auction preview. The formal program will be 2:30-3:30 p.m., followed by more desserts, wine tasting, and the silent auction. We're starting a little earlier this year, so there will be plenty of time for people to attend the formal program and still have time for fun and socializing before catching their bus home. Please start thinking about acknowledging the excellence of the people with whom you work and study.

Nominte a staff member for a Staff Award by sending an email by May 23rd to Cecilia Paul following the format below:

The three Staff Awards ( 1 for research activities, 1 for outreach activities, and 1 for administrative activities) will recognize those staff who display any or all of the following CHARACTERISTICS:

Excel in their work
Provide extraordinary service beyond their basic job description
Demonstrate unusual resourcefulness, initiative, teamwork, and/or problem-solvingskills

1.  Research activities. Exemplary performance by a professional or classified staff member who exhibits one or more of the characteristics listed above in the performance of College research activities, building the base of knowledge that makes our world a better place.

2.  Outreach activities. Exemplary performance by a professional or classified staff member who exhibits one or more of the characteristics listed above in the performance of College outreach activities.  Outreach is defined as sharing CFR research, knowledge, and skills with the external community through activities like organizing professional conferences or meetings, conducting community or school programs, providing technical transfer, or other activities that provide education to the external community.

3.  Administrative activities. Exemplary performance by a professional or classified staff member who exhibits one or more of the characteristics listed above in the performance of College administrative activities. This could be a staff member who supports central College activities or the work of the College's faculty, centers, cooperatives, field sites, or other units, providing the organizational foundation that supports the work of others.

To support your nomination, please send a brief but specific nominating statement identifying your candidate, the nominated award(s), and how your candidate exemplifies the  CHARACTERISTICS listed above. You may nominate a candidate for more than one award.

Send your nominations to cece@u.washington.edu no later than MAY 23rd.

Nominate a graduate student for a TA/RA Award by sending an email to Amanda Davis following the format below:

For the Annual CFR recognition event on May 27th we would like to recognize the outstanding Teaching and Research Assistants in the College. We are soliciting nominations for individuals who have excelled in this arena during their graduate studies. Please address these three points in your written nomination and email it to me by May 23th.

1: Excelled in their work, whether it be teaching or research
2: Provided extraordinary service to the college above and beyond their job descriptions
3: Demonstrated unusual resourcefulness, initiative, teamwork and problem solving skills

Thanks! There is a lot of great work being done in the college by our graduate students and this is the opportunity to recognize them, so please take a moment to send me an email.

Enter the Dessert Contest

Just in case you needed another good reason to attend the CFR Recognition Event on May 27th, we are having our annual DESSERT CONTEST! To enter, just bring a dessert (large enough for most to try...), cut up into bite-size pieces, with a descriptive tent sign/label. Each dessert will be assigned a number and people will be able to vote for their top three. The winner will receive a gift certificate to Mrs. Cooks in U Village!

Silent Auction

We're doing it again! Back by popular demand, there will be a silent auction to benefit the CFR Scholarship Fund at the Recognition Event. For those who haven't particpated before, this is an opportunity to bid on a wonderful assortment of experiences and services (not stuff that you have to figure out where to put, but things that you can do and enjoy). Past items have included the Lippkes' rooftop wine tasting; a tour of wine country, destination tba; 9 hours of weeding and pruning in the garden of your choice; sunset sailing, etc.) Stay tuned for this year's items!

Think about what fun (and useful) things you'd like to share or what skill or opportunity you can offer to your colleagues. I'm sure that everyone has something to offer. Email Sally Morgan what you would like to contribute or if you just have some vague ideas, call her (5-0952) or stop by Anderson 107 to figure out how to package what you can offer to provide a new and unique experience for someone else here in CFR.

Watch this space. Auction items will be listed as they are received!
