Working with Portal.SEFS in Windows

Once you have connected to the Portal.Sefs VPN connection you now have the capability to browse file shares and remote to computer as if you were on campus.

If you have not yet created your VPN connection or are not sure how to connect we have written walkthroughs for Windows 8.1, Windows 7, and OS X.

If you are using an Apple computer please follow the instructions found under Working with Portal.SEFS in OS X.

Browsing File Shares

To browse file shares through the VPN open a File Explorer window (standard folder window) and in the address bar type '\\\main'

You can create a shortcut on your desktop to this location by navigating to \\, right clicking on the 'main' folder and selecting 'Create Shortcut'

Remember this shortcut will not work if you are not connected to the Portal.SEFS VPN service.

Connecting to Remote Desktop Clients

Once your VPN is connected you can now remote into servers and other clients as if you were on campus.

First open the Remote Desktop Connection program and enter the name of the server you would like to connect to and click Connect.

If you're not sure what servers you have access to or should be using please contact your supervisor or SEFS IT; you can enter and track service requests through Jira, our new full-service management portal (NetID required for log in). If you encounter any difficulties or have other urgent questions, you can also call 206.616.7365.

You will be presented with a login screen to enter your credentials, please ensure you enter 'netid\' prior to your netid in the username field. Then simply enter your netid password and click OK.

If you have any questions on either of these processes or experience any trouble connecting, please log a request through Jira or call our helpline at 206.616.7365.
